My wife suggested this book to me. She said I may be interested in the subject. The cover read, “A teacher’s guide to prompting Student Success.”
I was extremely impressed by the subject matter of the book. It may have been written for teachers, yet the applicability reaches far beyond. I made connections to the business world as I read through each chapter. The lessons are on how to grow and develop students’ abilities and knowledge which can be applied to employees at any work place! The book has 11 chapters followed by an introduction (188 pages) and is written in a simple, comprehensive language and includes exercises. The book’s foundation is simple; a Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset and how to change your Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset. The authors present creative ideas and strategies to inspire students and establish a growth mindset. The book offers ways to support, guide and encourage students. It offers ways to overcome challenges, strategies to inspire, and how to give and receive constructive feedback to students. In my mind, I replaced the word student with employee. The key to success is the Growth Mindset. The introduction starts with a quote by Vince Lombardi, “They call it coaching but it is teaching. You do not just tell them - you show them the reasons." How appropriate! The book absolutely lives up to its title as a playbook! It will give you lessons in inspiring your employees, realizing their potential, exploring new opportunities and succeeding in your enterprise. This playbook will help you be a leader and a mentor to your employees. Another big plus is that this book has enough exercises, plans and explanations without getting bogged down with facts and figures. The last chapter (11) is Self-Care and reflection. I was very happy to see this chapter. Many of us are busy juggling work and life and neglect to take care of ourselves. That negligence leads to burnout, both physical and emotional. When we suffer, people around us suffer. Self-care is about nurturing ourselves and honoring ourselves. I highly recommend The Growth Mindset Playbook: A Teacher's Guide to Promoting Student Success by authors Annie Brock & Heather Hundley to all business owners. The prelude to this book is The Growth Mindset Coach by the same authors. I’m very excited to read it as well.
